Backatown Comics is an original series created by Newtral Groundz that turns the streets, culture, and conversations of New Orleans into a bold visual universe. Set in a fictionalized version of the real Backatown neighborhood, the series uses humor, heart, and sharp storytelling to spotlight what makes the city unique.
This is our second AI-assisted storytelling project, following the success of Louisiana Crime Files, and it pushes our creative mission even further by blending satire with social commentary.
What Is Backatown Comics?
Backatown Comics is a digital comic strip built from the ground up by Newtral Groundz. It features original characters who navigate life in a version of New Orleans that is exaggerated, surreal, and deeply familiar. The stories are grounded in the real energy of the city, from schoolyards and barbershops to Mardi Gras routes and courthouse steps.
The series runs weekly across social media and is designed to feel like a TV show in comic strip form. With each panel, we reflect the truth, beauty, and chaos of the Black New Orleans experience.
Meet the Characters
The story centers around Corey Landry, a college student who moved away after Hurricane Katrina and returns to find the city he once knew transformed. He reconnects with family and friends who each have their own dreams, flaws, and philosophies.
- Zay is Corey’s younger brother, a rebellious genius who sees the world differently.
- Maymay is their older sister, a local DJ and the loudest voice in the room.
- Rico is the cousin always chasing a come-up and never avoiding drama.
- Nia is the voice of reason, focused on building a future beyond the block.
- Judge Grady is a barber who also acts as the neighborhood’s unofficial judge, weighing in on street disputes and real issues.
These characters are animated archetypes of modern-day New Orleans life. Their dialogue is sharp, their situations are real, and the world they move through feels lived in.
Why We Made It
Backatown Comics was born from our mission to create media that reflects our world. We were inspired by shows like The Boondocks and Atlanta, but we wanted something that felt closer to home. A series made in New Orleans, for New Orleans, with a visual style that blends AI art, vintage textures, and street-level storytelling.
It is the second official AI-assisted narrative from Newtral Groundz. Louisiana Crime Files laid the foundation, and Backatown takes it in a new direction—infusing comedy, family dynamics, and cultural pride into every scene.
What Comes Next
We are building more than a comic strip. Backatown Comics will expand into short-form videos, music tie-ins, merchandise, and we’re also considering a manga. Fans will be able to experience the world of Backatown through episodes, games, and even in-person events.
This is just the beginning of a larger creative universe powered by Newtral Groundz and driven by the voices of the South.
Backatown Comics is where fiction meets the real New Orleans.
Created in our city. Built by our team.
