Marquez Callaway’s Journey: From Undrafted Rookie to New Orleans Saints Leader

Marquez Callaway, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound wide receiver, embarked on his NFL journey with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2020, following a promising tenure at the University of Tennessee. Over the span of four years in New Orleans, Callaway appeared in 45 regular season games, including 17 starts, amassing impressive career stats: 83 receptions totaling 1,069 yards, and scoring seven touchdowns. In addition to his receiving skills, Callaway proved versatile by returning 14 punts for 149 yards and four kickoffs for 94 yards.

During his rookie year in 2020, Callaway seized the opportunity to carve out a spot on the Saints’ roster. He showcased his potential with 21 catches for 213 yards, alongside making notable contributions in special teams with 11 punt returns for 122 yards and four kickoff returns for 94 yards over 11 games, three of which he started. The following year, Callaway emerged as a key player for New Orleans, leading the team in receiving yards and touchdown receptions with 46 catches for 698 yards and six touchdowns. His performance established him as a reliable target in the Saints’ offensive scheme.

After four seasons with the Saints, Callaway transitioned to the Pittsburgh Steelers during the offseason before ultimately returning to New Orleans. His journey in the NFL was preceded by a stellar collegiate career at the University of Tennessee. Callaway was renowned as one of the Volunteers’ top punt returners, finishing with 92 receptions for 1,646 yards and 13 touchdowns. He ranked fourth in school history with a 13.6 punt return average and second all-time with three punt return touchdowns. His senior year in 2019 was particularly notable, earning him All-SEC second-team return specialist honors. That season, he compiled 154 punt return yards, which included a spectacular 65-yard touchdown, and also recorded 30 receptions for 635 yards and six touchdowns, further solidifying his reputation as a dual-threat on both offense and special teams. With his blend of athletic ability and versatility, Callaway continues to be a valuable asset in professional football.
